Reports suggest, almost 85% of the pollution in rivers is caused due to untreated sewage, pesticides used in agriculture, discharging of heavy metals in water, floating animal carcasses and large accumulation of solid wastes

Figures suggest 120 cities and towns located beside the Ganges dump up to 4.8 billion litres of sewage on a daily basis

95% of all the plastic debris found in the oceans comes from rivers including the Ganges. And ocean clean-up researchers have often voiced, the most number of ocean pollutants like plastic comes from the majority of Asian rivers

The Ganges alone is responsible for 1,15,000 tonnes of plastic output every year in the oceans. The damages are quite telling in numbers, marine ecosystem gets devastated by the death of close to 1 million sea-birds, sea mammals and countless fishes every year
